I'm not sure you can call a podcast "art", but it certainly takes talent to be entertaining, insightful, and funny for an hour straight. I was already a fan of Ryan McMahon prior to him starting to podcast and became a much bigger one afterward. As a casual fan, I knew he was funny, what I didn't know was just how smart he was. Even when I don't agree 100% with what he has to say, he never fails to make excellent points that really get me thinking.
I've been particularly impressed lately. His discussion with writer Taiaiake Alfred that included some very intelligent thoughts on the position of Native people in their colonized world today and how to move forward without losing identity was phenomenal. A great discussion that really gets to the heart of political issues but just when you think it's getting too serious, you get some laughs too. It left me eagerly anticipating his current episode, a discussion with AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo. I haven't had a chance to listen yet, but I'm itching to as soon as I get a chance.
Ryan's podcast was started as just another outlet for his comedy. Over time it has evolved and become more polished and serious. Yes, there's still comedy there for sure! You get more now, though. Now you also get some insight into current indigenous issues, artists, inspirations, and more. It's really worth a listen. The best part? It's absolutely FREE. You can go listen at the link below or look up Red Man Laughing on iTunes. Also be sure to check out Ryan's main page - he's got a lot going on and it's all worth getting into.
